The Glass Castle - Jeannette Walls
I went for a walk in the nature preserve near here today, sat on a bench under the trees, and finished reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. I enjoyed the read, though it has taken me several months to get through. I could put it down, because the storyline and message were fully known to me from the first chapter. Walls banked on readers being interested in the details of her story rather than its unfolding, and it was successful for her (based on the popularity and acclaim of the book). But it’s not a memoir I will call upon for future inspiration as much those by writers like Mary Karr, Annie Dillard and others. When and if I write my story, I hope it will be at at least as much about the telling as the details.
